Puppy preparations!

The puppies are due in a little over two weeks! We're very excited but enjoying our free time while we still have it.

We set up the whelping box today:

It doesn't have a bottom - just four walls with a tarp underneath for easy cleanup. The walls are low enough that Cricket can jump in, but high enough to keep puppies from escaping (at least for a few weeks). The PVC around the edge forms a "pig rail" that puppies can crawl under to avoid being accidentally stepped on or sat on by mom - probably not an issue with a bitch Cricket's size, but it's good to take precautions. The dog bed will be removed when it's puppy time; it's just in there for now to get Cricket used to sleeping in there again.

Cricket herself is the size of a small blimp, and is only going to get bigger. We don't know how many she's expecting yet, but from her size we're guessing it's going to be another large litter.

Ramses was bred by Rachel McClandish of Mirabella Longhaired Whippets, and Cricket was bred by Jean Mackenzie of Tova Sighthounds. Pedigree can be found here.

We are very excited about this litter! Cricket and Ramses both have great structure and lovely temperaments, and we are hoping for some very nice puppies from this breeding. Sire and dam have also both tested normal in CERF (eye) and heart tests, and there will be no MDR1 or CEA affected puppies.

Getting things started

Hello and welcome to the Aurai Sighthounds puppy blog! I'll mostly be using this blog to share updates and photos of our upcoming litter. Stay tuned for new posts.

For anyone who is discovering us for the first time, my name is Emily. I live in a small town near Ithaca, NY with my family and our two longhaired whippets, Cricket and Journey. Our dogs are a big part of our lives and we enjoy participating in all kinds of fun things with them, including conformation, agility, lure coursing, and obedience. We occasionally have puppies available to pet, show, or performance homes.
